Orthostatic intolerance is when symptoms occur when upright, like sitting or standing. People with OI may experience symptoms like lightheadedness, fatigue, difficulty thinking, headache, blurry vision, heart palpitations, nausea, or fainting.
There are several types of OI, including Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), Orthostatic Hypotension (OH), Vasovagal Syncope (also known as Neurocardiogenic Syncope), and Low Orthostatic Tolerance.
Up to 97% of ME patients are estimated to have Orthostatic Intolerance for me this is POTS.
POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) is an abnormal response by the autonomic nervous system to being upright.
My POTS
I’ve suffered a lot with Orthostatic Intolerance and am now diagnosed with POTS. Looking back I have had symptoms from a very young age/as long as I can remember (things like purple feet when sitting or standing, feeling very faint and struggling with vision issues when standing) but I only got diagnosed last year.
I don’t need to be upright for symtoms of OI to happen, any position where I am not laying flat can cause them for me. Even just being propped up at a small angle in bed.
This can be “activity” for people with combined ME and OI, particularly those severe/very severe, and can also cause onset of PEM.
