Gastroparesis

Gastroparesis, also called delayed gastric emptying, is a condition where the stomach empties food and/or liquids slowly which causes persistent digestive symptoms such as nausea, pain and vomiting, constipation, malnutrition, weight loss or gain, poor appetite and feeling full sooner, such as after only a small amount of food, or even all the time.

Gastroparesis is thought to be a problem with the nerves and muscles in the stomach. It's not always known what causes it. It can also be a complication of Diabetes.

Treatments can be dietary changes, medications such as pro-kinetics that speed up the process of the digestive system, liquid diets (and enteral feeding supplements) or some may need feeding tubes.

My Gastroparesis

For me, gastroparesis has caused a lot of symptoms. I've had to have time in hospital due to not being able to keep any food or drink down for weeks at a time. Currently my gastroparesis is better controlled with medications such as Domperidone and Prucalopride but I still suffer a lot with extreme pain, nausea and am not able to eat enough food to keep up my weight so I'm on nutrition drinks however even then it remains a struggle.
